He was a member of the Na Hoku Hanohano (Hawaiian Music) Award winning groups Ka’eo and The Ali’i’s, as well as 8 years as the “voice” of Hapa.
He started his professional career while still in college, accompanying such performers as Gabe Baltazar, Henry Kapono, Loyal Garner and Nohelani. His passion for the electric bass made it rise to the top as his main instrument. He then moved on to the saxophone, and in college, performed in the jazz ensemble as a bass player, and the wind symphony as a percussionist. His early years consisted of studying piano, guitar and ‘ukulele, combined with the natural ability to sing. NATHAN AWEAU was born into a musical family. Five of his original songs were featured in the award-winning George Clooney film The Descendants, and his most recent solo CD Wahi Pana (Songs of Place) won the 2018 Nā Hōkū Hanohano (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”) Award, following Awards for Best Slack Key Album in 20. Jeff has written a Concerto for Slack Key Guitar and Orchestra, Malama ‘Aina, which premiered in 2016 with the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra (Hawai‘i premiere with the Hawai‘i Symphony Dec 10, 2017).
In 2018, he was awarded a Native Arts & Cultures Foundation fellowship. His talent with slack key, classical, and jazz guitar styles has given him a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage. His passion for the guitar shines through his solo performances and his deep knowledge of open as well as standard tunings has allowed him to collaborate with a wide variety of artists and orchestras. A two-time Grammy-winner, Jeff takes the open tunings of Hawaiian slack key to explore multiple genres with confidence and flair. Guitar virtuoso JEFF PETERSON is a star of the next generation of slack key guitar players. For the last 15 years, George Kahumoku Jr.’s Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar and ‘Ukulele Workshop creates one of the great musical learning experiences in the Islands today, and embodies George’s belief in sharing, celebrating, and perpetuating the unique music and culture that is Hawai‘i. A renowned storyteller, George collaborated on the book A Hawaiian Life with long-time friend Paul Konwiser to capture his hilarious, entertaining on-stage stories, which led to his film biography Seeds of Aloha.
